मुहावरे भाषा का आभूषण है। मुहावरों के प्रयोग से हमारी शैली में रोचकता आती है, उसका सौन्दर्य बढ़ता है तथा हम अपनी बात को अधिक अच्छी तरह व्यक्त कर सकते हैं । अच्छे मुहावरों का प्रयोग हमारे भाषा-अधिकार को बताता है जिस बात को कहने के लिए हमें कई वाक्यों की आवश्यकता पड़े, उसी बात को अच्छे मुहावरों की सहायता से हम एक-दो वाक्यों में ही अधिक सशक्त तरीके से व्यक्त कर सकते हैं। किसी व्यक्ति की भाषा से ही, हमारे मन में उसका मूल्य बनता है। कहा भी गया है Speak that I may know thee (बोलो, जिससे मैं तुम्हें जान सकूँ) यदि आप चाहते हैं कि लोगों पर आपका अच्छा प्रभाव पड़े, वे आपका आदर करें तो आप अपनी भाषा में अच्छे- मुहावरों का प्रयोग करना अवश्य सीखें । अंग्रेजी में मुहावरों का अतुल भण्डार है। बहुत से मुहावरे केवल किताबों में पाये जाते हैं, दैनिक व्यवहार में उनका प्रयोग कम होता है । हमने इस अध्याय में केवल उन्हीं मुहावरों का समावेश किया है, जिन्हें आप बेहिचक प्रयोग कर के अपनी अभिव्यक्ति क्षमता (Power of Expression) को बढ़ा सकते हैं।
1	Abide by	जो निर्णय ले लिया है यह कह दिया है। उसके अनुरूप आचरण करना ।
We must abide by the decision of the Principal
2	Account for	हिसाब देना, कारण बताना ।
(i) I had to account for all the money that I had spent on the tour. (ii) How do you account for your failur?
3	Ask for	माँगना
God has given him every thing he could ask for.
4	Avail oneself of	उपयोग करना
you should avail yourself of this offer.
5	Back out	पीछे लौटना
When I asked him to support me in the Election he agreed at first but later backed out.
6	Back up	समर्थन देना
I'll contest the election if you promise to back up.
7	Be afraid	डरना, किसी को कहने में संकोच करना ।
I am afraid to go out in dark. I am afraid, I cannot accept your offer.
8	Beat about the bush	मौके की बात न करके इधर-उधर की बात करना ।
You should come straight to the point and not beat about the bush.
9	Behave	व्यवहार करना
The teacher said to the boy, "Behave yourself, don't be silly."
10	Blew	फालतू में पैसा खर्च करना
He blewed all the money that his father had given him.
11	Blow hot and cold	जल्दी-जल्दी बदलना ।
you can't rely on her, she blows hot and cold.
12	Blow one's own trumpet	अपनी ही बात करना,अपनी प्रशंसा करना
He always keeps on blowing his own trumpet.
13	Blow out	बुझाना
The light of the candle was blown out by the wind.
14	Make one's blood boil	खून खौलना
My blood boils when I think of his rude behaviour.
